About Greensburg Salem Percussion
The Greensburg Salem Drumline and Front Ensemble is the percussion section of the Greensburg Salem Golden Lion Marching Band. This section consists of students in grades 8-12. Performances include our traditional parade down Main Street to Offutt Field for every home football game. Once at Offutt, the drumline performs a "pre-pregame" show for the student section as well as pregame and halftime at football games. Our annual performance schedule also includes pep rallies, band festivals, Veteran's Day programs at our elementary schools, the Fort Ligonier Days Parade and the Greensburg Halloween and Holiday parades.
In addition to Friday night football games, the "Nationally Renowned Golden Beats Campaign" can be seen in support of their classmates at Boys' and Girls' soccer, basketball, hockey, volleyball, and lacrosse games. The drumline has also performed for cross country meets.
Over the years, we have been invited to perform at special events including, Light Up Night at Westmoreland Mall, the Westmoreland Arts and Heritage Festival with TUSK - The Ultimate Fleetwood Mac Tribute Band, Westmoreland Walks annual Pink Ribbon Walk and was selected as the first ensemble to perform at Westmoreland County's March for Parks.
The drumline typically consists of 4-5 snares, 1-2 tenors, 5 bass drums and 1-4 cymbals. Students in this section are required to memorize and perform warmup exercises, cadences, stand grooves as well as the show and parade music. Beginning in 2017-18, our front ensemble, or pit, made a return to the marching band. This provides students with an opportunity to play mallets or auxiliary percussion instruments. Being a member of the percussion section requires countless hours of practice at home as well as rehearsals.
It is a goal to provide a positive educational environment for everyone involved in the percussion section. We always look to “be better today than we were yesterday” and take pride in working hard to achieve this goal while still having fun. The hard work pays off as members of the line continue to improve by refining techniques and music throughout the season. There are few learning experiences like marching band as you will be challenged physically, mentally and emotionally, but with hard work and commitment you will feel a sense of achievement each and every week.
Commitment is one of the strongest traits of the percussion members. They are encouraged to participate in all of the performance opportunities presented to them. Each member must be responsible for the care of their own equipment and to each other, in the sense that as an ensemble, they all must have a thorough understanding of all of their parts for the group as a whole to be successful.
The Greensburg Salem Percussion section is like no other organization at Greensburg Salem and these students take full advantage of the opportunity that they have. There is no team that is more dependent on each other for success and that is why the percussion section has to hold themselves to a higher standard. Everyone is a starter on the field and everyone needs to put in the necessary time to be the best that they can be.
